Twenty-five-year-old Mary McElroy was bathing when she was kidnapped by four men. It was the evening of May 27, 1933

The men broke into the house with a rifle and waited for Mary to get dressed, before taking her to an old farmhouse and chaining her to a wall in the basement. Indeed, they started joking with the woman about the sum they would ask for her ransom.

Her father was a rich man. The kidnappers after a demand of $60,000, agreed to a ransom of $30,000 for Mary's release. Thus Mery was left free and unharmed.

Three of the men were captured a month later and sent to trial. However, she Mary said she was well cared for during her 29 hours of captivity. Apparently one of the men gave her some flowers.

She was full of guilt, and she publicly sympathized with the kidnappers, so much so that she asked for the sentence to be overturned!

Mary remained friends with two of her captors, visited them in prison and brought them gifts.

However, the story did not end well. At the time of the trial, Mary experienced many breakdowns. Her mental state collapsed. She committed suicide and left a note that said:

“My four captors are probably the four people on earth who don't think of me as a total fool.”
