Five Hundred Dollars

A businessman consulted his attorney about collecting a five-hundred dollar debt from a former associate.

“Have you a note or anything which proves that he owes you the money?” the lawyer wanted to know.

“No, I’m sorry to say.”

“Then the only thing for you to do is write him a note asking for the thousand dollars he owes you.”

“But all he owes me is five hundred dollars.” The attorney smiled.

“Exactly. He will write and tell you so, and then we’ll have the proof we need to use in court.”
